The Building
The venue: a modest and serially remodeled building (from the 1920’s through a vinyl siding’d and cleverly roofed 1980’s expansion) that is in a slow but steady beautification/remodel phase, starting with new raingardens and a permeably paved courtyard. The interior space (see floor plan here) includes a 1326 sf wood dance floor, a 232 sf stage, a 1350 sf dining room (linoleum floor) as well as a small (142 sf) kitchen. View a slideshow of the building here.
For artists: we offer affordable rehearsal space and instructor rates for classes. We have been known to collaborate with artists, hosting performances and short-term art shows.
The organization: the Highland Park Improvement Club is a neighborhood volunteer owned and operated 501c3 organization, established and evolving since 1919. HPIC provides a gathering space in a diverse neighborhood that includes many artists, educators and young families. Our popular Corner Bar - a monthly “pop-up” bar featuring local musicians - draws sociable crowds of all ages. We have a monthly Movie Night as well, and special events like our annual Winetasting Fundraiser that is packed every year.
We are the arts and cultural hub of the neighborhood!
