The Space

Coral is a space for individual creative thought and work, especially rehearsal, small-scale exhibition and healing.

One person or small group visits the studio at a time.

It is a private room with windows on three sides (all of which slide open and have blinds), heating, walnut floor and trim, and adjustable lighting. It also holds vintage couches, a low table repurposed from nearby industry, a mid-century desk and chairs, folding massage table and a Knabe baby grand piano which needs tuning. Just past the inner door is an ADA-accessible WC. In front grow strawberries, raspberries, black currants, decorative grasses and a magnolia tree.

Coral is a personal space for planning and creative thought which I share with people I trust. My own practice concerns aesthetic/functional aspects of systems, i.e. systems art. I am especially interested in sharing the space with individuals who investigate process within their artistic practice.

This space is generally suitable for:

rehearsal

- music lessons or practice

- small ensemble music rehearsal (e.g. string or vocal quartet)

- limited solo/duo choreography

- open reflection

exhibition

- hanging/displaying work for up to several months

- criticism/feedback

- intimate sound/movement performances

healing

- individual or small group yoga or other movement practice

- structural alignment

- energy healing

I hope to share the space with practitioners and artists who are respectful of others and leave an environment more clean and alive than they find it. It is also important to me that guests are willing contribute to the larger community.

The studio is accessible by the 131/132 bus lines, or from the 60 or 124 buses with a moderate walk. There is limited parking during the day, but plenty of space within two blocks, and also abundant parking in the evening.

Coral is part of Equinox Studios, where dozens of fine artists and artisans work daily in media ranging from oil paints to glass, to wood and metalwork.

The Building

Coral is one of the many jewels of Equinox Studios, where dozens of fine artists work daily in media running from oil paints to glass, wood and metal.

Working near so many artists is one of the benefits of using the space. One can walk down the hall to repair or fabricate a part, or just to observe people working in different media. Artists commonly invite one another to shows and talk with each other in passing.

Equinox operates a shuttle between several South Seattle studios and galleries on Art Attack nights (every 2nd Saturday throughout Georgetown), including Coral.

Kitchens such as Harried and Hungry, Pho Ha, and Katsu Burger are each within one block, and we are close to a couple gas stations as well. We are about a ten-minute walk from Georgetown proper.

Coral is in the former front office of McKinnon Furniture, which owned our immense, concrete warehouse until about 2015. They reputedly planed and lay our walnut floor late one night after some post-work beers a few years ago.
